The planning team continues to move forward on several major projects including the establishment of a parish-wide master plan to create bike/pedestrian trails network, the construction drawings for the first phase of the reimagination of the Zoo and Greenwood Community Park, the dredging of the Lakes, the creation of safe houses at Memorial Stadium and Airline Highway parks, and the creation of a third community park at Airline Highway.
In all, Planning and Engineering managed 83 Capital Improvement and System Planning projects completing 28 of them which include:
• The CAPP Ochsner/Ward’s Creek bridge crossing and trailhead • CAPP Bluebonnet extension trail phase one
• Howell Community Park urban farm and fitness court
• Bike Share bike stations
• Burbank Soccer Championship Fields and lighting • Zoo and Greenwood Community Park master plans • Nine neighborhood parks
As I write this letter, the BREC team is serving the community through the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus. Despite the uncertainty of the situation, BREC staff is serving the community admirably and has ensured that parks, which are more important than ever, are able to be utilized for essential outdoor recreation, healthy activity and much-needed stress relief. While we have had to shift our focus, we haven’t lost ground on bringing construction projects to fruition and have shifted from in-person programs and events to virtual offerings including programs and events, videos and activity sheets for the community to enjoy. We also quickly partnered with a third-party to utilize our parks to provide nutritious meals to children who are out of school and are working on plans to help stimulate the economy as it is allowed to reopen in phases.
The future is uncertain right now, but I am proud of how our staff has continued to seek new ways to serve the residents of East Baton Rouge Parish through this unprecedented situation.
